Kayaking the Green River at Mammoth Cave

A guide to kayaking and canoeing the Green River and Nolin River at Mammoth Cave National Park — outfitters, routes, and what to expect.

Kayaking the Green River at Mammoth Cave

Most visitors see Mammoth Cave from below ground. The best visitors see it from the water too.

The Green River and its tributary, the Nolin River, flow right through Mammoth Cave National Park. Paddling these rivers gives you a completely different perspective — limestone bluffs, wildlife, and a peace you won't find on the busy cave tours.

The Rivers

Green River

The main river through the park. Class I waters — gentle current, no rapids, suitable for beginners. The Green is wide, scenic, and lined with limestone bluffs and mature forest. You'll likely see great blue herons, turtles, and maybe river otters.

Nolin River

A smaller tributary that merges with the Green inside the park. Even quieter than the Green, with narrower channels and more intimate scenery. Great for a half-day float.

Where to Put In

  • Houchin Ferry — Popular put-in on the Green River inside the park. Free launch, parking available.
  • Wax Ferry — Downstream put-in for longer floats.
  • Mammoth Cave Ferry — Another popular access point on the Green.
  • Nolin Lake Tailwater — Put-in below Nolin Lake Dam for a Nolin River float.

Outfitters

Don't have a boat? Several local outfitters rent kayaks and canoes with shuttle service:

  • Mammoth Cave Kayak & Canoe — Cave City. Half-day and full-day trips with shuttle. Good for beginners.
  • Green River Canoeing & Kayaking — Munfordville. Longer trips, more adventurous routes.
  • Nolin Lake Kayak — Near Nolin Lake State Park. Good for lake paddling.

Expect to pay $40-80 per person depending on the trip length and boat type.

Best Routes

Houchin Ferry to Mammoth Cave Ferry (4 miles, 2-3 hours)

The classic. A gentle float through the heart of the park. Limestone bluffs, clear water, wildlife everywhere. Good for families and beginners.

Dennison Ferry to Houchin Ferry (7 miles, 4-5 hours)

The half-day adventure. More remote, fewer people, beautiful scenery. Pack lunch and make a day of it.

Nolin Lake Tailwater to Wax Ferry (6 miles, 3-4 hours)

The quiet alternative. The Nolin sees less traffic than the Green. Narrow, forested, peaceful.

When to Go

  • Spring (April-June): Best water levels. Rivers are full, current is steady, and the banks are green.
  • Summer (July-August): Water levels can drop, making some sections shallow. Go early to beat the heat.
  • Fall (September-October): Gorgeous foliage, comfortable temps, but check water levels first.
  • Winter: Possible but cold. Rivers can be high after rain. Check conditions.

What to Bring

  • Water shoes or sandals with straps (no flip-flops)
  • Sunscreen and hat
  • Dry bag for phone and keys
  • Plenty of water
  • Snacks
  • Bug spray (especially in summer)

Safety

  • Always wear a life jacket (required by law)
  • Check water levels before you go — the rivers can be dangerous after heavy rain
  • Tell someone your float plan
  • Bring a phone in a waterproof case
  • The rivers are gentle but not swimming pools — respect the water

After a day on the river, our cabin has a fire pit and screened porch that's perfect for the post-paddle recap.
