Cave City Kentucky — What to Do Beyond the Cave

Cave City is more than just the gateway to Mammoth Cave. Here's everything to do in and around Cave City, Kentucky.

Cave City Kentucky — What to Do Beyond the Cave

Cave City (population ~2,300) is the gateway to Mammoth Cave. Most visitors blow through on their way to the park and miss everything else. That's a mistake. Here's what the area has to offer beyond the cave.

Dinosaur World

The classic roadside attraction. 150+ life-sized dinosaur replicas along a paved walkway. Kids absolutely love it. Adults appreciate the kitsch. It's not a museum — it's a photo op and a fun 45-minute stop.

  • Location: Just off I-65 in Cave City
  • Time: 45 minutes to 1 hour
  • Best for: Families with kids under 12
  • Cost: ~$15/adult, ~$12/kid

Kentucky Down Under Adventure Zoo

An Australian-themed zoo in the middle of Kentucky. Yes, really. Kangaroos, emus, and a walk-through aviary with lorikeets. There's also a gem mining sluice that kids go nuts for.

  • Location: Cave City, off I-65
  • Time: 1-2 hours
  • Best for: Families, animal lovers
  • Cost: ~$20/adult, ~$15/kid

Mammoth Cave Railroad Bike & Hike Trail

A 9-mile paved trail following the old Mammoth Cave Railroad bed. Flat, shaded, and great for cycling or walking. You don't have to do the whole thing — start at the visitor center and go as far as you want.

  • Location: Starts near Mammoth Cave Visitor Center
  • Time: 1-4 hours depending on distance
  • Best for: Casual cyclists, families, trail runners
  • Cost: Free

Nolin Lake State Park

20 minutes from Cave City, Nolin Lake offers swimming, fishing, boating, and a sand beach. The lake is clean and usually uncrowded compared to more popular Kentucky lakes.

  • Activities: Swimming, fishing, boating, camping
  • Rentals: Pontoon boats, kayaks, and paddleboards available
  • Best for: Half-day lake day after a cave tour
  • Cost: Free entry, boat rental ~$50-150/day

Lost River Cave (Bowling Green)

30 minutes north, Lost River Cave offers a 45-minute underground boat tour — yes, you ride a boat through a cave. Different experience from Mammoth Cave and worth the detour.

  • Location: Bowling Green (30 min north)
  • Time: 1.5-2 hours including grounds
  • Best for: Second-day activity when you've done Mammoth Cave
  • Cost: ~$25/adult, ~$15/kid

National Corvette Museum (Bowling Green)

Bowling Green is where Corvettes are built, and the museum is right across from the assembly plant. See historic 'Vettes, watch cars being built on the assembly line (weekdays), and sit in a simulator.

  • Location: Bowling Green (30 min north)
  • Time: 1-2 hours
  • Best for: Car enthusiasts, anyone who appreciates American muscle
  • Cost: ~$15/adult, ~$10/kid

Local Food

Cave City's dining scene is small but solid:

  • Bouchelle's Restaurant — The best sit-down option in town. Steaks, seafood, Southern classics.
  • Freddy's Dairy Bar — Local institution. Burgers, shakes, and soft-serve. Cash only.
  • Cave City Pizza — Reliable pizza for the "we're too tired to cook" nights.
  • Highway 31 W Smokehouse — BBQ done right. Brisket, pulled pork, sides.
