A Family Trip to Bowling Green: Kid-Friendly Fun
Mammoth Cave is an obvious draw for families — kids love the underground adventure. But if you're spending more than a day in the area, Bowling Green (just 30 minutes away) has enough family-friendly activities to fill a whole weekend without breaking the bank.
Start Underground: Lost River Cave
Before or after your Mammoth Cave tour, check out Lost River Cave in Bowling Green. It's a shorter, easier cave experience — a guided boat tour through an underground river that takes about 45 minutes. Younger kids who might get tired on Mammoth Cave's longer tours will love this one. The valley above the cave has nature trails and a butterfly habitat, too.
Ages: All. Cost: ~$15/adult, $10/kids 4-11, free under 4.
The National Corvette Museum
Even if your kids couldn't care less about cars, the National Corvette Museum is worth a visit. The sinkhole exhibit — where eight Corvettes were literally swallowed by the earth in 2014 — is fascinating for all ages. Kids love the interactive displays, and the museum runs special events throughout the year including Corvette car shows and hands-on STEM activities.
Ages: 5+. Cost: ~$12/adult, $7/kids 5-12, free under 5.
Play Outdoors: Basil Griffin Park & Circus Square
Basil Griffin Park on the south side of Bowling Green has a lake, walking trails, multiple playgrounds, and open fields perfect for burning off energy. Pack a picnic lunch and let the kids run.
Downtown, Circus Square Park is a smaller green space with a splash pad in summer — a lifesaver on hot Kentucky days.
Eat Where the Locals Eat
- Burger & Bowl — A bowling alley that serves legitimately good burgers. Kids bowl, parents relax. Perfect.
- White Squirrel Brewery — Family-friendly during the day, great craft beer for parents, solid pizza and pretzels for the kids.
- Marble Slab Creamery — Ice cream made fresh on a frozen marble slab. It's a show and a dessert.
- Cheddar's Scratch Kitchen — Reliable family chain restaurant, huge portions, and the honey butter croissants are worth the trip alone.
Rainy Day Backup: Aviation Heritage Park
If weather forces you indoors, the Aviation Heritage Park at the Bowling Green-Warren County Regional Airport showcases historic aircraft and Kentucky aviation history. It's small, free, and oddly captivating for kids who like planes.
Western Kentucky University Campus
WKU's campus is beautiful — rolling hills, historic buildings, and the Culture Heritage Center with its museum of Kentucky folk art. Walk the grounds, grab lunch at a campus cafe, and let the kids burn energy on the quad.
